Commodore’s Corner

I hope everyone had a great holiday season!  I know I did, but keeping your boat decorated for over a month with Xmas décor is enough for me.  I am ready to get back to boating.

I would like to welcome everyone to the New Year with the Cooper River Yacht Club. I am looking forward to meeting all the members.

If you haven’t met me yet, my name is Tony Ward and my boat owners name is Boo Ward (wife).  We have been members of the CRYC for many years and both have had experience in other boating organizations as Past Commanders in the Power Squadron.  My wife is president of the ladies auxiliary in the East Cooper Out Board Club and I am a Vessel Safety Officer for the power squadron.  I do look forward to enjoying a lot of time with the CRYC members.  Thanks for letting me be one of the many leaders in the club.

Our first board meeting was held on board the Knot Less II where each board member got their committees formed and are now looking for member’s assistance.  Please, if you want to get involved, get on any committee.

Anyone who missed the first outing to Acme Cantina, a fun time was had by all.  Thanks for having chosen this establishment.  I wish I had left when Larry Lanz did instead of staying at the bar all night.  It happens (to me).

Please check out The Helm Hog for all the upcoming events.

Again I personally want to thank everyone who helps with all the functions of the club.  If you have a question, please call me or E-mail (now that my computer is back on line).

See you at the next club gathering!  Remember to have your vessel safety check early in the boating season.  The dates on the flares don’t last forever.

 Tony

REMINDER about Potluck Dinners…

The January Potluck Dinner was converted into a “Dine Out” at the Acme Cantina in Isle of Palms.  Approximately 35 people attended.  Good food and a fun time were had by all.

The February Potluck Dinner will be hosted at 6 PM on February 19 at the home of Maria Sindram and Johan Prins, 36 Chapel Street, Charleston.  Everyone is welcome.  Please phone Maria at 843-853-6681 to confirm your attendance.

The CRYC will continue to have its Potluck Dinners on the third Saturday of every month.  Just bring your own main course and one side dish or dessert to share.  Join in the feasting (there is always an abundance of food) and great conversation and fun to be had.

The location varies, but the potluck dinner starts around 6 p.m.  An E-mail is sent to all current members just prior to each dinner to announce the location.  So come and fill up on the tasty goodies others bring to share (the wide variety is amazing), as well as catch up on what has been going on with everyone since the last Potluck.

Scavenger Hunt – May 21

Mark your calendars for May 21st and plan on participating in our “On the water – Scavenger Hunt”.  Jack Navin and Reg Brown have both provided materials from previous “Hunts” as resources but judging from these items, person-power participation is the key to success.

If you have a “favorite” nautical question for the hunt, or if you have contact with a sponsor, or you’d just like to give us a hand, please email me at StevenEarnhardt@gmail.com and let’s get to know each other.

Planning for this event begins about two months ahead, and ends with a flurry of fun, the Hunt!  If you’ve attended a previous scavenger hunt, or even some other Club’s event and have a suggestion, please let me hear from you now, so we can incorporate ideas.

Thank you,

Steve

Rear Commodore Steve Earnhardt

v      A Fond Bon Voyage … Larry and Polly Lanz have sold the house, put their few remaining goods in storage and left the country. Just temporary. They are in Mexico on a much needed vacation. When they return they will be here for about 6 weeks. Then the big trip begins … The Great Loop. It will take them North along the East coast, up the Hudson to Canada, across to Georgian Bay, around to Chicago, to the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee and Tombigby rivers to Mobile. Then around Florida to SC.

Larry and Polly were among the founders of CRYC. Larry has been treasurer, special events, swap meet and one of Reg Brown’s biggest helpers in our early days. Polly was our historian and scrapbook keeper along with helping on many events. They both were always there when something needed to be done.

THEY WILL BE MISSED. Make sure you look them up in March and wish them a Bon Voyage. They will be gone at least a year.

v      Farewell and Good Luck! to Greg and Carol Gegner, who will be moving to Milwaukee, Wisconsin during the spring to follow professional pursuits.  They will be surely missed by their Charleston and South Carolina friends.

NOTE TO MEMBERSHIP … Greg is this year’s Rear Commodore of Training.  A volunteer to fill this position would be greatly appreciated.  Please contact Greg at 843-629-8853 for information on the position.

v      Rumor has it that Ger & Anna Warren will be around the Charleston area sometime during March.  Be on the look out for them.

v      Captain Mikeal Martin, son of Billy & Kay Martin, is back for his second tour (one year) of Army duty in Iraq.  Upon leaving on January 29, he was expecting to be stationed approximately 15 kilometers south of Baghdad.  Our hearts, prayers, and best wishes are with him, his new bride Brandi, and their families.
